Charles IV

Charles IV (1316-1378) was the King of France from 1322 until his death in 1378. He was the son of King Philip IV and Queen Joan I, and he ascended to the throne at the young age of six after the death of his father. Due to his young age, Charles's uncle, Charles of Valois, acted as regent until he came of age.

As king, Charles IV faced many challenges, including conflicts with England over territories in Gascony and Flanders. He also had to deal with rebellions from nobles and peasants who were unhappy with high taxes and feudal obligations. Despite these challenges, Charles IV was known for his diplomatic skills and was able to maintain peace within his kingdom.

One of Charles's most significant achievements was the establishment of a new legal code known as the "Code Noir," which aimed to protect the rights of serfs and peasants. He also promoted education and culture by founding universities and supporting artists such as poet Guillaume de Machaut.

Charles IV is also remembered for his role in the Hundred Years' War between France and England. He initially supported England but later switched sides when he saw an opportunity to gain more territory for France.
