A dependent territory or city without its own government that belongs to a state but is not part of its territory. A distinction must be made between colonies and satellite states with their own government and officially independent, although they may be de facto controlled by another state (CMEA states). In history, the word colony has referred to different forms of remote settlement or colonization.
