Kemal Atatürk, born Mustafa Kemal, was a Turkish statesman and military leader who is widely regarded as the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey. He played a crucial role in the country's transition from an empire to a modern nation-state.
Atatürk was born in 1881 in Selanik (now Thessaloniki), which was then part of the Ottoman Empire.
