Catalog topic | Belgian colony

Belgium has for centuries been ruled by the earliest Spanish Habsburgs (1519 & ndash; 1713) and then Austrian Habsburgs (1713 & ndash; 1794). After a brief domination of France, the Vienna Congress awarded it to the Netherlands (1815 & ndash; 1830), an independent Belgian state was established only after the Belgian Revolution in 1830. At this time, however, other European states already had the most economically promising overseas regions under their sphere of influence, Belgium (as well as Germany or Italy, whose modern statehood also arose in the 19th century) thus faced stiff competition from traditional colonial powers , especially England or France.
