Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, commonly known as Michelangelo, was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of the High Renaissance period. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest artists in history and his works have had a profound influence on Western art. Born in 1475 in Caprese, Italy, Michelangelo showed an early talent for art and was apprenticed to a painter at the age of 13. He later moved to Florence where he studied under renowned artists and developed his skills in sculpture and painting.
Michelangelo's most famous works include the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, which took him four years to complete. These intricate and detailed paintings depict scenes from the Bible and are considered one of the greatest achievements in Western art. He also created the iconic sculpture of David, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture that stands at over 17 feet tall.
In addition to his artistic talents, Michelangelo was also a skilled architect and designed several buildings including St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. He was known for his perfectionism and attention to detail, often spending years on a single project to ensure it met his high standards.
