Mahatma Gandhi, also known as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was a prominent leader and political figure in India during the early 20th century. He is widely recognized as the father of the Indian independence movement and is revered as one of the most influential and inspirational figures in history.
Gandhi was born on October 2nd, 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, India. He studied law in London and became a lawyer, but his true calling was to fight for the rights of his fellow Indians who were oppressed by British colonial rule.
He adopted a nonviolent approach to protest and civil disobedience, inspired by his belief in ahimsa (nonviolence) and satyagraha (truth force). Through peaceful protests, boycotts, and hunger strikes, Gandhi led the Indian people in their struggle for independence from British rule.
His philosophy of nonviolent resistance influenced many other leaders and movements around the world, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. Gandhi's teachings also emphasized self-sufficiency, simplicity, and equality for all people regardless of caste or religion.
Despite facing imprisonment and violence from authorities, Gandhi remained steadfast in his principles and eventually led India to independence on August 15th, 1947.
